The sad part of this is that I can see it happening...Frankie with his little scrawny body hanging out the window losing it and you trying desperately to get closer to the steering wheel to keep it out of the ditch...oh what i would give to be young again and do just a little bit more of the stupid stuff we did back then.

Thanks Kari!

I use iphoto on the mac - so I did a little tweaking with saturation and contrast and the like - it makes them POP a bit.

Some day I'd like to get a professional camera and learn how to use it - but in the meantime - I have a lot of fun messing around.

We were there for the day with the opening ceremony. How impressive it is! The area has multiple picnic benches and grills for wonderful outdoor lunches. New rest rooms and paved pathways makes it convenient for visitors. Now the fall colors will paint a panorama that is breathtaking! It's a great excursion for the afternoon, don't miss it.

As Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz says "there's no place like home". And I know she's right. No matter where you go in life, or what you do, or become, there is nothing as comforting as coming home.

I fondly remember Johnny too - he is such a special fixture of Roulette. One time I was with my friend and her mom. She stopped at Grandins to get gas and couldn't work the pump. Johnny was right there to help.

Haha Andy! I have three or four other posts in the works on Johnny.
Love that old guy to death!

One of them is about Johnny's Favorite things - which includes whistles!

Thanks so much for sharing your story!

By the way - my dad called to correct me - it was actually a CHAINSAW and not a lawnmower that he was working on that day.

But I know Johnny has stopped by and offered advice about many a sputtering lawnmower over the years!

I have a good one too Josh...back when my Dad was a cop I swear he was Johnny's idol. Any time that I walked in to once was Grandin's store and John was in there for his daily 3 or 4 cans of pop he would always pipe up..."your dad's the cop" and of course i would say "yep Johnny...my dad's a cop". No rudeness involved because I was taught to treat him with respect just like you.

As you know Johnny had a whistle that he loved to blow and would take it with him everywhere....to the unsuspecting person he would catch of guard that whistle would scare someone to death if they didn't know what Johnny was doing as he reached in to his pocket to get the whistle. Anyways...one day John was standing by the Friendly Inn blowing his whistle at cars as they would went by on Main Street or stop at the stop sign. As Johnny caught a car going up Main Street towards your house he started to blow the whistle at them....something then clicked with Johnny that there was a car coming up to the stop sign and was his chance to get another one....as he spun around with the whistle in his mouth ready to let loose on that car he took a deep breath....the problem is that when he spun around already to let loose with that deafening sound he saw that it was my Dad in his cop car. Well my Dad laughs every time he tells the story because he said Johnny almost swallowed that whistle trying to keep from having his breath pass through to make that ear pierciing noise.

I have many more stories to tell about Johnny -
My father always treated him with dignity and respect - and taught us to do the same - There's always been a sense of humor about Johnny - and we've had a lot of laughs - but not because we were making fun of Johnny - but because Johnny's adventures were always great stories.

Yup. the author of that book is currently a Commissioner in Potter County. He's an old friend of mine.

My brother did his senior project on the Fitzimmons murder, and Paul lent him all of his reseach from the book. It was very interesting to see all the details.

BTW - F. Lee Bailey - a famous lawyer was involved in the case -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._Lee_Bailey for some bio info - I'm pretty sure he defended the murderer in the case - though he didn't win.

Wow! Thank you so much for the quick response!
I'm not so concerned with the "ghost" aspects of the stories, I'm just really interested in the history behind the stories that gave me chills as a kid. The link you gave is exactly what I was looking for! I'm definitely going to give the book a read, it looks like the real story of what happened is scarier than any "ghost story."

I do know which house you are referring to J - that house is the "Fitzimmons Place" My buddy Paul Heimel wrote an extensive book on the case.
You can buy used copies of the book on Amazon -

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0939542064/ref=dp_olp_used_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=used

A friend of mine lived there for several years when I was in school.... she said there was a carving in her closet - carved into the brick of her chimney - of a man carrying an axe. I don't know if she was telling the truth or trying to scare us.

She used to report hearing strange noises - but never heard any stories about bleeding walls.

As far as ghost stories - I'm a fan of stories - but I'm hard pressed to accept that the spirits of the dead roam the earth. I do believe in the supernatural - but my explanation of that is another post for another day.

As far as "Sugar Bush" goes - I don't know if I've ever heard about that house - I know there are a lot of old abandoned houses out that way -

Nice story! I got to this page while trying to Google the truths behind some ghost stories I heard while growing up, and I was wondering if you might remember them too. The first was about a "murder house" in Roulette. I can't remember many details except that a man supposedly murdered his elderly parents many years ago while they were sleeping, and that if you visited the house you could see the walls bleed red. I never saw the house, but the story was popular with kids when I was in Jr High - around 2000-2002.
The other was about an abandoned house on a small dirt road off of Rte 6 between Port Allegany and Roulette. I think we called the house "Sugarbush." It was common for kids to sneak in at night.. I remember it being really eerie as most of the furnishings were still in the house including silverware in the drawers. The story was that an older couple died from a natural gas leak and that nobody realized until their dog, who had been chained outside, died of starvation/neglect.

Do you remember these stories or know if there is any merit to them? My searches turned up nothing.. any info you might have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Yeah - Joe and Florence were wonderful people. I smell another post in the future just about them.

Sometimes in church - Pastor Youngblood would let us request a hymn. I used to pick "Wonderful Grace of Jesus" (http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/w/o/wondergj.htm) Because when Florence played it on the organ - her feet on the foot pedals made it look like she was dancing- and we were baptists - so we didn't dance in church.

Yeah - we were rebels. ;)
I'm still not sure how we talked our parents into letting us go camping when there was an axe murderer on the loose.
