Expert Will Assist County Departments With Archiving

It’s a project being spearheaded by the Pennsylvania State Archives to assist county governments in archiving records and historical documents. Labor Union Donates In Support Of ‘Meals On Wheels’

mealsdonationState and local government employees have once again made a financial donation to the Potter County Area Agency on Aging in support of the Holiday Meals Program. Here, AFSCME Local 2117 secretary Diane Paul (right) present a check to Barb Kiel, an administrator for the county agency. The labor union also donated to Christmas House. Collections were taken from employees with Coudersport Borough, PennDOT, Forestry, Parks, Public Welfare, Fish and Boat Commission, Game Commission, State Police Dispatch, the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum.

West Nile Virus Program Coordinator Dies Unexpectedly

irenenorthPotter County employees are mourning the loss of one of their own. Irene M. North, 73, of Harrison Valley, who was employed as the county’s West Nile Virus Program coordinator, died unexpectedly on Friday, Dec. 3, in her home. She began working with the Department of Emergency Services in 1999 as a field technician for the West Nile Virus program and later became coordinator. She was recalled by her workmates as a person who was very dedicated to public safety through the monitoring of mosquito populations that might be carrying the virus. A native of Maryland, she was employed by Northern Potter School District for many years and was organist at the Harrison Valley Federated Church. She also served as an inspector of election for Harrison Township. Among survivors is her husband of 56 years, Jerrold L. North.

Recycling Cuts Amount Of County Waste Sent To Landfill

recyclePotter County’s Building and Grounds Maintenance Department expresses appreciation to those county employees who have helped to make our recycling program a success. David Knowles, supervisor, reports that more than half of the  trash being generated in county offices is being recycled. This is saving the county money – it costs less to dispose of recyclables – and it’s an environmentally responsible habit. With a more concerted effort by employees, the 50-percent figure could probably be pushed to 80 percent, or even higher.

Free Flu Shots For County Employees Set Monday

flushotsCharles Cole Memorial Hospital is offering free seasonal influenza and pneumonia vaccines at no cost to Potter County employees on Monday, Nov. 22, from 9 am to 11:30 am at the Gunzburger Building. This year’s flu vaccine includes protection against seasonal and H1N1 influenza. The shots will be administered at the conference room on the first floor, just inside the North Main Street entrance.

Local Cooperative Extension Director Honored For 25 Years

dontannerPenn State Cooperative Extension Director Don Tanner has been honored for 25 years of service to the organization. Tanner serves Potter, McKean and Cameron counties. A native of Turtlepoint, Tanner was an extension educator in Schuylkill County and came to McKean Couty in 1989 to serve as 4-H youth development coordinator. He has been involved in economic and community development, strategic planning, leadership development and youth education.

Final Commissioners’ Town Meeting Tonight In Coudersport

townmeetingsPotter County Commissioners conclude another series of public “town meetings” in communities throughout the county tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 16) at the Coudersport Elementary School, starting at 7 pm. Commissioners Doug Morley, Susan Kefover and Paul Heimel have already held similar sessions in Austin, Roulette, Ulysses, Galeton and Shinglehouse. Format is informal. Following brief presentations, the floor will be open to questions and a roundtable discussion of issues affecting the county and/or local communities. Although the meetings are open to all, the commissioners are especially encouraging attendance by residents of the school district where each meeting is being held.

County Agency On Aging Providing Free Flu Shots

flushottPotter County Area Agency on Aging is teaming with Charles Cole Memorial Hospital to provide seasonal influenza and pneumonia vaccines at no cost to many Potter County adults. This year’s flu vaccine includes protection against seasonal and H1N1 influenza. Clinics are open to all Potter County adults 60 and older or those 18 and older who are considered high risk due to diabetes, lung, heart, kidney or liver disease, cancer, anemia, immune system, muscle or nerve disorders, pregnancy or long-term steroid treatment.
