Today Is ‘Daffodil Days’ Order Deadline!



daffodilsCounty employees are once again being encouraged to support the American Cancer Society “Daffodil Days” fund-raiser. Judy Eckert (Cooperative Extension) has agreed to spearhead the project for county offices. She can be reached for more information at 274-8540. Order deadline is Tuesday, Feb. 22. Items will be delivered on March 14. Options include Daffodil Bunches of 10, $10; Vase of Hope, $15; Boyd’s Bear With Bunch, $25; and Mini-Pot of Daffodils, $12.

Kyle Franke Recovering From Injuries Suffered In Afghanistan



kyleA month ago, 19-year-old Kyle Franke was back in Potter County, seeing old friends and hanging out with family. The timing for his short reprieve from military service in Afghanistan couldn’t have been better— certainly not for his mother Julie Dubots, anyway: it was her birthday and her only child was home for it.

Snack Sale Campaign Launched As ‘Backpack’ Fundraiser

chipsCounty employees are supporting a sale of snack products as a fundraiser for the Fill A Backpack campaign. The all-volunteer program provides backpacks with school supplies to needy students in Potter and surrounding counties. Boxes of 36 snack-size packages are available with potato chips, pretzels, popcorn and more. For the most part, cost of each box is $10. Order deadline is March 31 and delivery date is estimated at April 16. For more information, contact Deb Ostrom in the Potter County Planning Office, at 274-8254.

County Employees Come Through For Animal Shelter

teachespetMany county employees and members of the community came through for a local animal shelter as part of a holiday giving project spearheaded by Potter County employees’ union, Local 389-C (AFL-CIO), Bins were placed in county buildings for donation of items to help Teachers Pet Rescue of Coudersport. The shelter operates on a small budget and is a true labor of love for Roger and Kris Arbogast. Among those on hand to receive the many bins of items that were dropped off by Local 389-C was this jolly puppy, one of the shelter’s newest arrivals. The Arbogasts expressed their appreciation to the union and to all those who supported the drive.

Among commonly used EAP services are help with martial and family discord, issues with children and adolescents, emotional distress, personal issues, anger, stress, time management, alcohol or other drug addictions, health-related issues, child or spouse abuse and concerns about aging parents.

Highmark Offers County Employees Help With Weight Loss

weightcontrolThe launch of a new year signals a renewed effort by the county’s health insurance provider, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, to assist those employees who would like to lose weight. Highmark has available free services that include a specially trained health coach available through a toll-free telephone number, an online wellness program that’s interactive and easy to use, and a wide variety of literature. Meanwhile, the Potter County Commissioners have arranged for an employee discount program at two local facilities, the Charles Cole Memorial Hospital Wellness Center and Chad’s Solid Body Gym.

Commissioners Appoint New Chief Clerk, Fiscal Director

kathleenmajotjudysnyderTwo significant changes have been made in the Office of County Commissioners. Kathleen Majot has been named Chief Clerk for the Potter County Board of Commissioners, succeeding Todd Brown, who resigned to accept a private sector job. Judy Snyder, who previously served as Executive Secretary, has been appointed to fill the Fiscal Director position that Kathleen Majot is vacating. The Commissioners intend to fill the Executive Secretary position in the coming weeks. “We’re confident that these changes will result in an efficient and responsive administrative office,” the Commissioners said. “We appreciate your patience, understanding and cooperation during the transition period.”

Holiday Schedule Change: Open Friday, Closed Monday

holidayHere’s a reminder about the important change in the county holiday schedule that employees received several months ago. Following discussions with employees and their union leaders, the Commissioners decided that county offices will be open on Friday, Dec. 31 (which was originally scheduled as a holiday). Offices will be closed instead on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, in observance of the New Year holiday.

Lions Club Shares Recycling Proceeds With ‘Meals On Wheels’

lionsdonation1Coudersport Area Lions Club Treasurer Mark Benson presents a $1,300 check to Sherry Hoffman from the Potter County Area Agency on Aging to support the purchase of one year’s supply of meals for a client of the agency’s “Meals on Wheels” program. Most of the funds came through contributions to the donation box at the Lions Club’s recycling center each Saturday morning and through the sale of aluminum cans brought to the center.  The club has announced that another fund-raiser, the popular Chili for Charity dinner, is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 30, from 11 am to 3 pm at the Coudersport Volunteer Fire Department Training Center.
