Researchers who monitored 8,632 power plant workers in Germany have found that 94% of said workers were exposed to asbestos coming from insulation materials used in turbines for an average of 20 to 21 years. Asbestos is a highly toxic mineral that has long been used in industry because of its strength and heat resistant properties. However, asbestos has been either partially or completely banned from use in several developed nations throughout the world because it causes such fatal illnesses as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the protective lining of the lungs, heart, chest and abdomen. The EPA and Consumer Product Safety Commission has yet to approve a complete ban, despite being well informed of the high risk of disease.
