A Plus Certification Course Being Offered at PCEC
The Potter County Education Council’s Galeton Office will hold a A+ Plus Certifcation course.
This 100-hour course provides the student with core skills in hardware and operating systems technologies and teaches students how to properly maintain, troubleshoot and repair a personal computer. This course will help prepare students to sit for the A+ certification exam. Cost for the course will be $1250. Classes will begin on Monday, February 15, 2010 from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. For more information or to register call 814-435-9490.
PCEC Classes at the Seneca Highlands Area Vo-Tech
Introduction to Welding (30 hours) This hands-on course will provide you with an introduction to welding including: Stick, TIG, and MIG Welding, and cutting using Oxyacetylene and Plasma Cutters. You will also learn about the basics and importance of welding safety, welding terms and definitions, common welding defects, and how to avoid them.

Home Massage Therapy (12 hours) Who doesn’t like a nice relaxing massage every now and then? This course is aimed at people who enjoy an occasional massage as well as those who are
interested in pursuing a career in massage therapy. Over the course of 12 hours, you will learn basic techniques focusing on relaxation, relieving tension, and improving health that can be used at home. This course is also a great way for those interested in a career in massage therapy to learn a little more about massage and try some hands-on techniques to see if it is right for them. Participants must register for this course in pairs and will only practice hands-on work with their course partner. The cost for this course is $120 per person. Introduction to Laser Engraving (12 hours) Have you ever seen intricately engraved wood, glass or metal products and wondered how on earth they do that? Most places use a computerized laser engraver. If you currently own a business and are interested in seeing what a laser engraver could do for you, are considering purchasing a laser engraver to start your own engraving business, work somewhere that has an engraver and are interested in job opportunities, or are just interested in how laser engraving works, you should take this course. Course topics include: overview of how laser engraving works, basic programming, and actually designing and engraving a product of your choice (you provide the product to be engraved). This course is an ideal start for entrepreneurs, people looking at changing jobs, or for someone looking at making a unique gift or keepsake. The cost for the course is $95 per person. ServSafe Food Safety Course
The Potter County Education Council will hold a ServSafe Food Safety Course at the Coudersport office. ServSafe is a 15-hour certification program developed by the Restaurant Association Education Foundation. The course meets certification requirements for individuals who are responsible for the safe handling of food in restaurants, schools, elder care facilities, lodges, bed & breakfasts, community centers, and other food concessions (organizations or businesses that sell or prepare food on a regular basis). The course will be held on February 10 & 24 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The cost for the course is $180 per person for a new certification and includes a text book, $125 per person for a recertification with a textbook, and $75 per person for a recertification without a text book. Cooking for Crowds Course
The Potter County Education Council will hold a Cooking for Crowds Course at its Coudersport office. Non-profit, volunteer-run groups that prepare food to be served or sold to the public must be sure that the food is safe and of high quality. Food that is not prepared safely may lead to a foodborne illness outbreak. Foodborne illness is serious and can even cause death for some individuals. In addition to personal suffering, foodborne illness can lead to expensive medical bills, lawsuits, and loss of good reputation and business. Participants in this workshop will learn up-to-date methods for safely handling and preparing food for large groups. The workshop is
appropriate for non-profit food providers such as churches, fire companies, schools, and civic groups. This course will be held on February 24, 2010 from 6 – 9 p.m. and costs $12 per person. For more information or to register visit our website at www.pottercountyedcoucil.org.
Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Class at PCEC
The Potter County Education Council in conjunction with Pennsylvania College of Technology will be offering a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist course at the Coudersport office. This medical billing and coding certificate is for those interested in obtaining the skills needed to work in handling proper insurance claims in a physician’s office or medical insurance company using CPT and ICD-9-CM for coding. Some of the topics covered are medical terminology, medical insurances and third party reimbursements, filing claims, completing common insurance forms, delinquent and denied claims, and billing procedures. After completion of the course, participants will be able to sit for the National Healthcareer Association certification exam for designation of Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS). Classes will be offered at the PCEC on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, April 7 – June 23, 2010, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Cost, including cost of textbook, is $1550. Natural Gas Seminars – Coming Spring 2010 to PCEC
The Potter County Education Council’s Coudersport Office will host two Natural Gas Seminars offered by the University of Pittsburg at Bradford beginning this month. The descriptions are as follows:
The Natural Gas Drilling and its Effect on Roads, Bridges, and Other Municipal Concerns
Tim Ziegler, Field Operations Specialist, Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies, and Scott Sjolander, Educator, Penn State Cooperative Extension, Crawford County, will cover what effects natural gas drilling in the county may have on roads, bridges and other infrastructure and how parties may resolve these issues. The Environment & Natural Gas Operations – Minimizing Impacts to Forests and Wildlife
Robert S. Hansen, Penn State Cooperative Extension Educator, Ariculture and Forestry, will discuss the importance of our natural environment, the changes natural gas development may bring to the environment and what can be done to minimize these impacts.
